connecting external speakers

I recently purchased a Sony Vaio laptop with windowsXp.
I have tried to hook up a set of 5.1 digital speakers to
the computer but they wont work on this computer. They do
work on my Compac desktop computer which has windows 98.
What's possibly wrong?
 
Did u change the speaker setup in XP to 5:1?

Thru control panel/sound/advanced?
