Connecting DV camera to computer

I am attempting to connect a JVC digital video camera model # GR-DV500U to a Dell computer. I am unable to get MovieMaker to acknowledge that the camera is connected to the computer. What am I doing wrong? I have installed the software that came with the camera. That software also will not acknowledge the camera. Is there a conflict with Windows XP?

How are you attempting to connect it to the PC. Via a USB port for IEEE fire wire port?
