I want to connect a laptop to a desktop computer and
share files (copy data files from one machine to the
next.) Is there a painless way to do this simply using a
cable with the same connector on both ends and Windows XP
Home Edition?

Hello

Go out and purcahse a cat 5 cable, but it has to be a cross-over
cable

Open Help & Support. In the search field, type "direct connection" (without
quotes).
Look for:

"make a direct network connection by using a DirectParallel cable"

It should be the 2nd entry in the list window on the left. There are also
other solutions listed.
