OK, I solved the problem. If anyone else reads this and is
wondering...

IPX/SPX needed to be unbinded (or is that unbound) from
Microsoft File and Print Sharing and from Client for
Microsoft Networks on the XP machine.

I read Steve W's article on XP protocols... you can read
that for details, but in short:

Right Click "My Network Places", go to the Advanced menu,
then advanced settings, then under the Adapters and
Bindings tab, remove the IPX/SPX bindings

Al,

the question arises, why have IPX at all? My recommendation
would be to remove it altogether.
