A friend of mine used a hub and said he had to use crossover cable. I
use a router and use straight through with no problems.

When connecting two computers to an internet connection you should use a
ROUTER, not a hub.

No way to know with that skimpy description. What kind of internet
connection, with what, and where? Where is the hub?

ok i have a modem router downstairs with my pc i have a 2nd pc and an
xbox upstairs so i have cat5 cable running from down stairs to
upstairs with wall sockets on each end i then run a ethernet cable
from the modem/router to the wall socket downstairs which send the
broadband connection upstairs to that wall socket. then theres a
ethernet cable from the upstairs wall socket running to the uplink of
the hub(8 way hub) i sockets 1 of the hub there a cable running my
xbox which works fine in socket 2 there a cable connecting the the
new ethernet card in my 2nd pc which will not work the lights on the
hub wont even come on

Good. And that answer the question about a router. You have one.

I presume it has more than one ethernet port. One going to the downstairs
PC and another port connected to the CAT5 you describe below.

That would indicate router to CAT5 to Hub is working properly. Also
indicates you have DHCP in the router on since the x-box apparently gets a
working IP.
in socket 2 there a cable connecting the the
new ethernet card in my 2nd pc which will not work the lights on the
hub wont even come on

Either the NIC in the PC is not setup properly or the cable to the hub is
wrong/bad or you've plugged it into a port that's shared with the uplink
port (for example, on a "5 port hub/switch" the uplink port and port 5 are
actually the same port, just wired differently, and you can not use both at
the same time).

the modem router only has the 1 ethernet port the one running the
downstairs pc is usb connection.

if i look at the properties for the ethernet card in 2nd pc is saying
that the device is working properly. also if i dont go through the
hub, run cable directly from wall socket to ethernet card i can get
internet access on the 2nd pc.

is there anything i have to change on my 2nd pc setting to allow it to
connect through the hub.its windows 98

the light on the hub wont even come on when the cable between 2nd pc
and hub is connected. like its as if the port on the hub isnt
working(sending out connection) but then i tried all the other ports
and the same thing no connection

You haven't mentioned what any setting on anything is so it's hard to know
if it needs to be 'changed'.

I'm beginning to wonder if the modem/router is set to only allow 2 devices.
Do you have DHCP turned on and what address range is it serving?

This part, however, sounds like a bad cable. Switch cables between the
x-box and the PC to see if the problem moves to the x-box or remains with
the PC.

the problem is always with the pc, ok leaving the xbox to 1 side for
the min should i be able to connet to the internet by running a cable
from my hub which is receiving my broadband connection to a second
computer.

when i first turn on my second pc the light on the hub will light up
and stay lit but it seem to go out as soon as windows starts up.

i never changed any settings on my pc is there anything u have to do
to the pc to get it to regonize the hub. becasue theres no
installation disk witht he hub as it says plug and play.

just an update. when i shut down the 2nd pc the light on the hub will
come on but once its powered up again it goes out its as if it
working back to front cause surely the light should come on when pc
is started up and go out once shut down

any1 know what the problem could be, i think it something to do with
setting now but i havent got a clue

I think your best bet is to drop the hub, get a router with wireless
capability for future expansion, connect each of your PCs to the router via
straight-through CAT 5 cables, and connect the up port of the router to your
cable modem. I know nothing about an X-Box, but I assume it can be connected
to one of the router ports just like it was a PC.

I use the wireless connection of my router so that my laptop can have
internet access. There are also 3 desktop PCs in my system that are
connected to my router with CAT 5 straight-through cables. My router gets
access to the outside world with a cable modem.

As I understand it, you already have a router and a cable or DSL modem. So
you don't need a hub. It is just complicating your system unnecessarily.Your
setup should have a NIC card installed inside each PC, and one CAT 5
straight-through cable to connect each PC to the router, which in turn
connects to the cable or DSL modem from the router's WAN port. The cable or
DSL modem then connects to the outside world with an appropriate cable
(mine uses RG6 coax).

I know nothing about an X-Box, but I assume it can be connected to one of
the router ports just like it was a PC.

My router is also wireless-capable, and I use the wireless feature for my
laptop so that it can have internet access. There are also 3 desktop PCs in
my system that are connected to my router with CAT 5 straight-through
cables. My router has 4 wired ports in addition to it's wireless feature.
