Connecting 2 computers with a cross-over cable

I have a cat5 cross-over cable which I used to use to synchronise my XP
pro laptop with my win2k desktop however since upgrading my desktop to
xp pro, the two are no longer able to connect to each other. They both
say "This connection has limited or no connectivity" and complain that
they are not able to get an IP address. If I manually assign IP
addresses (in the 192.168.0.x range) they stop complaining but they
still can't see each other. Windows firewall is disabled at both ends
since I use Kerio and this is set to trust the ethernet connection.
They both have wireless connections too and are able to communicate
over that but sync'ing 60GB of data over a wifi connection isn't much
fun! Any help greatly appreciated.

Tamlyn,

When you use a cross-over cable, "This connection has limited or no
connectivity" is normal. Did you try using the connectiion when the error is
being displayed?

If you use Kerio, and it is set to "trust the ethernet connection", does that
include all addresses on there? Double check that, or un install Kerio, to make
sure that's not a problem. Misconfigured firewalls are probably the most common
cause for problems like yours.

Ah, I didn't know about APIPA. Yes I did try it anyway but each pc is
only able to see itself (after disabling the wifi).

All addresses in the APIPA, 10.x.x.x and 192.168.x.x ranges are trusted
on both computers. I tried disabling the firewalls but it's the same.
I don't really fancy uninstalling them especially as the laptop used to
work fine with the desktop before the desktop was upgraded.

OK, let's explore the "each pc is only able to see itself" issue. Please
provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, as a start.
Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely:
