Connected to VPN but cannot Ping...

Hi guys,

I have connected to my VPN server from my house. I got the
connection showing on my taskbar, I checked it out and it
says server ip address 192.168.1.236 Client is
192.168.1.142

When I pinged the client IP address, I got a reply, but
when I pinged the server IP address, request timed out.

My remote system is in my house behind a NAT router and
its local IP address is 192.168.1.101 so now it has
another one assigned by the VPN server and the address is
192.168.1.142 as stated earlier. I can ping the address
assigned by the VPN server but not the VPN server IP
address. The VPN server is on behind another NAT router
and its local IP is 192.168.1.10

Should I be able to ping the VPN server?

Thanks

If both sites are using IP addresses in the same subnet (192.168.1.x) you
will not be able to get traffic from one side to the other. The local
machine will see it as a local address and try to sent it through the local
NIC. You will need to put your home network in a different subnet from thr
remote site, so that it can route. Then 192.168.1.x traffic will go over the
VPN link, 192.168.x.y traffic will go to the local LAN through the NIC.
