Connect XP Laptop to PC via NIC'S

N

Nero

Hi,
have a laptop(notebook)running XP Home and my destop(tower)pc running XP
Home.
Want to connect them via CAT5(cross over) so that I can share/send files/use
internet from laptop.
Have tried connecting them to each other and on the laptop it shows as
connection ok(connected at ....) and on the tower pc it says limited
connection and that it is trying to connct.
seems like it cannot get ip number or something.
If I unplug the cable from the Lan port on either then it says(on the tower
pc or laptop)that cable is unplugged.
If it knows that then why can it not connect to the laptop?
The tower pc uses the nVidia nforce mcp network adapter and the laptop a
different built in one.
Any ideas?

That is a clue. If not using ICS (to share an internet connection), there
likely is no DHCP server on either to give them an IP. So you need to
assign each a static IP in one of the private network ranges. For example
you could assign 192.168.0.1 to one and 192.168.0.2 to the other (netmask
255.255.255.0 for both).
