Connect to 2 pc behind broadband router

S

Scott

I have configured the broadband router to connect to one computer behind one
computer using Remote Desktop Connection but I need to connect to another
computer behind the router. Is there any idea how to accomplish it? Your
advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

Scott

Two ways...

1. Open multiple ports on the router...

2. Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or Secure Shell (SSH) tunnel and
access all PCs through the tunnel. Personally I run RDP through a SSH
tunnel...

The advantage of the VPN or SSH method is that you only open one port on
your router minimizing the exposure of your network to the public
internet...

Sooner,

Many thanks for your rich information.

I tried the first step - configuration of router as follows:-

UPnP Forwarding page - I assume listening port is Int. Port.

Application name Ext. Port Protocol Int. Port IP
Enable
PC1 3389 TCP 3389 192.168.0.1
Yes
PC2 3390 TCP 3389 192.168.0.2
Yes

Before I tried it on internet, I tried to connect both pcs on LAN
successfully. Then I tried on internet. It connected to both pcs
successfully for about first 30 seconds and received below error message,
then cut off.

Remote Desktop Disconnected
Because of an error in data encrytion this session will end. Please try
connecting to the remote computer again.

I am unsure what I should configure the data encryption. Any idea?

Thanks,

Scott

* See if there is a newer release of the firmware for your router. If there
is install that. If not try reflashing the firmware. What manufacturer and
model of router are you using?

* The addressing seems strange...Generally the 192.168.X.1 address is the
LAN IP address of the router. Check to make sure that is correct for PC1.

Sooner,

The firmware is the latest one for my LinkSys BEFSR41 router. Further test
revealed the issue happens using the public IP when I tried it within the
LAN. If I test it using other LAN, for example, at home, it works correctly
so far. Not perfect but is good utility. Thanks!

I don't like the default ip range that is incompatible with the LAN at work
and at home so I change it to 192.168.0.100 for router.

I have another LinkSys router at home that does not have Int Port setting so
probably it does not use this utility.

Scott,

You should be aware that using the public IP of the router from a PC on the
local LAN behind the router to call another PC on the same LAN is not valid.

Testing over the local LAN using the private LAN IP is valid...

You really should consider using a VPN or SSH tunnel to connect to your home
LAN. Its safer...:)
