Confusing newsgroup name

John

I notice lots of people misinterpret the name of this particular newsgroup,
resulting in many messages that belong in other groups. I'm sure the reason
for this is the name of the group: '...public.access' . Wouldn't it be a
good idea to change the newsgroup name? Has this ever been tried?
Regards,
john

Given that newsgroups are propagated onto literally thousands of servers
around the world, changing names isn't an easy proposition. Microsoft could
change the name on their server, but because many people post using other
servers, that wouldn't eliminate this newsgroup from continuing to exist.

Hello all.

I think that the policy can be changed, before post your first
question, you will need to fill a Form with some question about
you, and put as a warning that if you post many question not
reated to the newsgroup or with slang phrases then more posting
will be not allowed.

I think this easier to control
Reread Mr Steele's response. Microsoft could set the policy for
those using the Microsoft gateway to the group, but not for those of
us who prefer to use a proper newsreader linked to a real service
provider.

In fact, some years ago Microsoft tried to "retire" the
microsoft.public.access newsgroup and removed it from their servers, but so
many people continued using it -- and then complained because so many of
their questions posted there remained unanswered -- that MS decided they'd
better reinstate it.

And you are a pretentious, obnoxious ignoramus.

If you think that ISP's all over the world will accept anonymous rmgroups
you're about twenty years behind the times.

I'll admit to both pretentious and obnoxious. Ignormaus I deny,
emphatically.
If you think that

I did not state any thoughts, which means you're about to make an attempt at
a dodge...

Who said anything about "anonymous rmgroups"? I certainly didn't. Seems to
me that you want to plaster me with an ignoramus label that rightly belongs
to youreself.

While we're on the subject of thinking, you might want to give it a try
someday. The best time to attempt it is probably sometime before you're
dead.

HTH. HAND.
