confused letters and numbers

My keyboard (Dell laptop with XP) suddenly substitutes
numbers for letters on many keys. Haven't a clue what I
hit to cause this.

Hi KC,

Just ensure that the 'FN' key is not depressed when you are typing. This may
be the cause of the problem.

Your keyboard "Numeric Overlay" might be active.

Consult the user manual for your laptop.

On a "Toshiba" it would be toggled via [Fn]+[F11]
