Confirm File Replace Error

I'm running 5 computers on a peer-to-peer network. This problem has slowly
progressed (over 3 weeks) to affect 3 of 5 stations.

I have found a Microsoft article that seems to describe my problem (830380 -
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;830380), however,
when I perform the Hotfix provide it does not solve my problem. The 3rd
problem under the causes describes what is happening.

Basically, whenever I try to create a .zip file and I get to the point of
saving the file with a name, I select Save, then I get "Save As Dialog Box"
that comes up and states that the file I'm trying to create already exists
(which is doesn't) and asks if I want to replace it.

If I select "Yes" to replace it, a file with the specified name is created
in the folder with a size of 0 KB. If I search in the zip temp folder I can
find the complete file which is to replace the 0 KB file. It is creating the
file, it just can't replace the file in the specified folder with the
completed file.

I'm also running into the same problem with a program we use to create .pdfs.

Also, you can't delete the above noted 0 KB file from the folder. It will
let me delete it, and it removes the file from the folder like it is deleted,
however, if I exit the folder and return to the folder the 0 KB file still
remains.

I have contacted Microsoft regarding this and they send me to Dell's support
since Dell modifies XP on the computers they sell. Dell was no help and sent
me to a technical support site that has a fee. I figured I would try and see
if anyone else can help me regarding this issue.

What are you making the ZIP archive with? Are you using third party software
or the built in support? Is this inside of a folder that has special
attributes or does it happen everywhere? Note that this doesn't mean that I
know your answer - just that these questions might help one of us find the
problem or at least enable an acceptable solution. Beyond that, does it
happen with files other than ZIP archives?

This problem occurs with the built-in .zip support in Windows Explorer, as
well as in other thrid party programs that do similar functions.

Basically any program that creates a file, then complies the completed file
in a temp folder, and tries to replace the original file with the complete
file is having this problem.

I don't know the answer to this I'm afraid. I spent a bit of time looking to
see if I could find something in the KB or online but, maybe it was my terms
used, I didn't manage to find anything really on track. What happens if you
try System File Check? Start > Run > type "sfc /scannow" (note the space and
the lack of one and ignore the quotes) and hit enter? If no good then how
about restoring to a time before this started showing up?

I appreciate you spending the time to help me.

I ran the SFC, it bought back no errors. I can look at restoring back to a
previous backup, I just don't want to lose the information in between.

I just realized something.

If I try to save the .zip file on my local drive, I have no problems.
However, if I try to save the file on my file server this is when this error
occurs. This would leave me to believe that I have some type of permission
problem.

Any thoughts?

Any thoughts?

What system is the file server running? You can check the permissions on the
server (probably a good idea at this point) and make sure you have enabled
users to change the files, create files, modify files.
