----- Confidential ------

Somewhere on the first page of a document I want the word
"Confidential" centered with solid black lines positioned at
around the middle of the height of the "C" running from
either end of the word to the closest page margin:

|---------------- Confidential --------------------|

("|" is the margin.)

I kludged this with a 3*1 table with long dashes in the
outer columns and the word "Confidential" in the center one.
I sized (autofit) the table first to contents and then to
window. Borders were blanked out. It worked (sort of).

Is there a more elegant solution? (I was unable to achieve
this with tabs and leaders.)

Create a graphic object comprising the word, in a borderless and unfilled
textbox, plus drawn lines (from the Drawing toolbar) formatted and
positioned as you need. Group the whole lot together and save as an AutoText
entry so you can use it again.

Here's how I would (probably) do it:

1. Insert a centered tab with a hyphen leader at the center of the line and
a right-aligned tab with hyphen leader at the right margin.

2. Press Tab and type your text. Press Tab again and then Enter.

3. Select each tab character and Format | Font | Character Spacing:
Condensed until the hyphens form a solid line.
