Conditional Forwarding for Single domain names

Chris

Dear All,

I need to set up conditional forwarding from a Windows 2003 DNS Server to 3
other DNS servers in other domains (Windows 2000 domains). The problem is
(or not as the case I hope) the domain names for these 3 domains are single
label domains (i.e. domain1 domain2 domain3) not domain1.com etc. Will
conditional forwarding work with such domain names ? I know on the Windows
2000 domain I had to create a special registry key to allow Registration of
single label domain names. I just wanted to check that the DNS in Win2003
would be OK with such names for conditional forwarding.

Thanks
Chris

Hello Chris,

I have tested this and it seems to work perfectly with out any problems.
I would test it thoroughly before you implement it on your production
LAN.

Should work ok, but there are (other) issues -- bugs in my
opinion but issues anyway with those single lable names.

Try it, you will know in about 2 minutes -- and let us know.

Just try it. And notice this is a LOOKUP, not a registration
so it shouldn't matter anymore than looking up the COM.
zone or even looking up the root "." both of which work
just fine in DNS (MS or others.)

nslookup -type=soa .
nslookup -type=ns .
nslookup -type=soa com.
nslookup -type=ns com.

Let us know if you have any trouble.

In addition to the other responses, as we all know, single lable name
domains are problematic, at best. If any way possible to upgrade the Win2000
domains to Windows 2003, consider a rename operation, for you own peace of
mind.
