Conditional formatting... more?

Does anyone have any kind of clever workaround to get past the three format
limit? I'm using Excel 2003. I've created a random fractal "landscape"
generator and would like to indicate different elevations with different
formats. But 3 is fairly limited.

One method is to ignore the sheet itself and instead use a surface chart,
but then the elevation lines all have to be in even increments.

Any ideas?

directions to install an event macro are earlier on the page, but it is
right click on the worksheet tab, then view code, and place code there.
