Larry,

Computer B is using an APIPA address. That is, its operating system is self
assigning that address (169.254.x.x) cause it can't get service from the DHCP
server that Computer A is accessing.

So you need to check the connectivity between Computer B and the router.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

I have check the cable at the router and at computer B. Both seem to be ok. The light on the router where computer A and B are connected are both on. I can ping from compter A to the router. I can not ping the router from computer B.

Larry,

check why DHCP does not work on the problem computer. Perhaps
not all required services are running.

Please have a look at http://www.michna.com/WxNetwork.htm for
some more details.

Since PC-B cannot ping the router, there is a low-level connectivity
problem: bad (or not fully seated) cable, bad port on the router,
bad NIC, bad driver for the NIC. Move the cable to a different port
on the router, swap the suspect cable with a good cable, make sure
PC-B can ping itself (127.0.0.1). Look in the Device Manager on PC-B
to make sure the NIC is OK and enabled.
