when attempting to shut down the computer---it stalls at

Well, it never shuts off. we have to "pull" the plug.

i am having the exact same problem. i've kept the power
button pressed down for a few seconds and it does shut
off, but someone told me that wasn't good for the
computer. i've tried all sorts of stuff to try to get my
computer to shut down but it won't and windows help and
support is really no help at all. (i obviously don't have
a solution but i'm just letting you know that i am having
the same problem!)

Could it possibly be that somehow the Advanced Power Management settings in
you BIOS has been changed? It would well be worth a look see.
