Computer won't shut down completely

Hi all,

We have an old old (8 years) computer with a newer hard drive (4 or 5
years). Over the years we have replaced and updated as necessary, and untill
recently it worked not too bad.

The hard drive just crashed last week and we replaced it. I re-installed
our Windows XP Pro, mostly letting the software install itself. It appeared
to work ok until we tried to turn the computer off. Windows shuts down, but
the computer continues to run. The only way to shut it down is to unplug it,
or hit the reset button. We tried to hold the power button for 6 seconds,
but it simply reboots and starts Windows.

Did I miss something in the install, or is it a hardware issue? Any help
appreciated.

Connie

Most likely you need an up-to-date ATX switching power supply. Your old
power supply isn't communicating with Windows to achieve a full shutdown.
You want a supply that is 300-500 watts that comes with the connectors that
your motherboard and drives require.
