computer won't go into standby mode

I am running Windows 2000 Prof SP4 and recently I've found
that my computer will not go into standby mode after the
preset time has passed. Sometimes when I try to put it in
standby manually it doesn't work either, other times it
does. ANy ideas why?

My laptop will not go into standby ever since I installed my DSL line. Apparently, the DSL adapter driver prevents it.
