Hi, I have spent the last 3 days trying every conceivable way to boot
up the iso image of my Windows XP that I made and burned to CD. I have
searched and googled but am not getting the results from any of those
posts. I keep getting a this program cannot be run in DOS mode or this
program must be run under WIN 32. Before I got Windows XP it used to
run Win98SE. On the startup screens it seems to be reverting to WIN98
somehow though there is nothing on the hard drive. My processor is
Pentium III 833 and my hard drive is a 40 gig Maxtor all formatted.
So, please help me getting this resetup, as I want a clean install,
none of the old stuff from the past 3 years on there, just fresh as I
am going to use it just for recording some music. I had a computer tech
here when my computer wouldn't install RoadRunner and I watched him,
there are so many little keys to enter that the average guy doesn't
know about to install devices or software on these computers. Anyway,
hope you can help me. DD

One cannot boot with an .ISO image of Windows XP.
If you had an authentic, genuine version of Windows
XP, that Windows XP CD is already bootable once
you set your CD drive as the first bootable drive in
the BIOS.

Hi, Ok, please don't take this negatively, but every and I mean every
time I ask for help on the Internet, I always get either some answer
that redirects what I asked or some foul reply. I asked why my iso of
WinXP Pro Corp wouldn't boot when computer wasn't starting up. Now, if
you try to tell me that you can't boot with an iso image of XP, well,
then I have to tell you that your info is incorrect, it is being done
every day of the week. I am asking is why won't the computer read the
CD and set it up. I hope I didn't toe step, you all know about PE
builder, right? Thanks for listening and assisting, DD

Windows XP Pro "Corp".
That old pirated piece of crap still floating about?

If you mean your companies Windows XP Volume License Agreement installation
CD - that's a different story.

You said "boot with burnt ISO". I have seen too many times someone take the
"iso" file and burn it to CD like any other file - and expect it to work. I
have yet to see (in this thread) that youy have actually burned the image in
the ISO to a CD (so that you can browse the CD and see more than one file -
see the actual Windows XP installation files in the proper directory
structure.)

ISOs don't normally "boot" in the Windows world. Unless you mean you are
installing it on a Virtual PC (or some such environment) and you made this
ISO image (using what method/application - might I ask?) so that you could
redirect the Virtual PC (when booting) to boot from said ISO image (mounting
it like a CD drive)?

Burned CDs from ISO images are no longer called "iso images" as they are now
just CDs containing what the ISO image contained.. So you can see that your
wording can be a bit confusing.

BartPE? Yeah - no problem using that here - but that is not really a
supported Microsoft product. Works great for me - I have used it and the
work of places like the Ultimate Windows Boot CD web site to make some
really nice utility CDs/DVDs.

The problem with your original post (and this one) is that you assume we
know what you are speaking of with very little information.

- You did not mention BartPE until later.

Knowing that..
- You mentioned that you were getting "this program cannot be run in DOS
mode or this program must be run under WIN 32" <- that tells me your CD is
not put together quite right. Either it was created with a bum boot image
or somehow you edited some file wrong with a hex editor or somehow just put
things in the wrong place.

I like to use Bart's Boot Image Extractor to get the boot image from the CD
I am using (integrating/upgrading/making into BartPE, etc.)

What you need to let us in on is WHAT you are trying to accomplish, how you
made this ISO, what is not happening that you expect to happen and what your
level of expertise is when it comes to doing such things.

Sorry, but Microsoft does not sell a version of Windows XP
called "WinXP Pro Corp". Unless you purchase a legitimate
version of Windows XP, no further help can be offered.

Ok, Shenan, thanks for the assistance. For those that said there is no
such thing as Windows XP Pro Corp, just used the shorter tems, then I
think you should rethink your answers. Here is what I am trying to do.
An ex-girlfriend gave me her computer with Windows XP Pro Corp on it,
but no CD's. This same occurrence happens every day on ebay when
someone buys a used computer with no OS disks. I want to make a
bootable CD of XP and do a clean reinstall and load what I want on the
hard drive. Then I will be able to reboot if the computer crashes,
which happens, believe me, I record music and I can tell you, it
occurs. So, that is the scenario, if you can help, much appreciated. If
you have some supposedly smart answer that doesn't divulge any new
insight, please don't post. Thanks for your revelations, DD

If you do not have the Windows XP CD, then you cannot
make a Windows XP CD from the installed operating system.
The installation files are found only on the original Windows XP
installation CD itself.

It appears you ex-girlfriend had installed a pirated version
of Windows XP Pro to begin with, which is illegal.

Ok, she did not install anything. She bought a computer with Windows XP
Pro on it. Why does everyone keep going into that area, geez! I have
spent the past week trying to do a fresh reinstall. No one on this
group or others summoned have helped at all. I believe that noone knows
how this can be accomplished or they do know that it can't be done, so
they keep firing back with smart remarks about some software that they
do not know the history of. What I am trying to say is, if you buy a
used computer from anyone, you should be able to make a copy of the
hard drive or Windows portion and make a disk that can recover the
computer if it crashes, simple, if it can't be done, then just say so,
but it should be possible, if not, then the whole Micrsoft management
are hurting the users of their hardware as well as their software, DD

Imaging software.

Hello, well, I imaged the Windows folder, but it won't boot up and
accessing the i386 folders doesn't work either. I must be leaving out
some important step when I try to do this. I am a betting man, but I
know that if someone was sitting behind me they would say, oh, you
forget to do this or that, by the way, the command prompts, say E:\>,
with a > in there. I haven't seen that in any of the command prompts
that people or websites put in their methods, so right there I know
something is different with what I am trying to accomplish. Anyway, I
know I am getting cranky, but I did talk with someone at a computer
place, one thath fixes them, that they use them all the time to test
PC's and so on, but, of course, they have to charge me for that info or
install. They aren't expensive but I could buy a discounted copy for
under $100, but the computer only cost $30, decisions, decisions.
Please feel free to transmit me to someone who can help, if not, if you
can think of any other avenues, much appreciated, DD
