COMPUTER WILL NOT SWITCH MONITOR ON

I was just interested if anyone knows the reason for this, on first switching
on my computer, the monitor will not switch on. If I turn off the computer at
the back, or at the wall switch and then turn the computer on again, the
monitor bleeps and then works fine. There are no other faults with the
machine and it's been like this for a good 12 months. More of an interest,
than a problem really.

Thanks in anticipation, that someone knows how to cure it, up to now, I
haven't had any luck.

It will either be a fault within the monitor, though I would tend to a fault
on the switching circuit of your pwr supply.
If you can test with another monitor that will rule out a monitor prob.

Thanks for the reply DL. I have change the monitor and it's still the same.
The problem strated when I moved over to Broadband, the modem kept, shutting
down and I was told to update the Bios for the motherboard. I did this, and
it did cure the modem shutting down, but left the problem I have now with it.
I have written to Abit, the makers of the motherboard, withour much success.

Your statement "monitor bleeps" (beeps) and then things work - indicates
monitor not at fault. The beep (by the computer)indicates that the computer
has performed a successful POST (Power on self test) - try holding the
on\off button in for a few seconds when starting the computer.

When your monitor does not come on, does the computer do anything at all;
beeps, etc.? Does it appears to boot, just no monitor? Fans start up and
the computer just sits there with the HD light on constantly (No flickers)?

It's definitely not that I have checked all the pins and connections. It
started after an upgrade on the BIOS for the Abit KT7 motherboard. The
monitor key colours appear, but that's as far as it goes, without completing
switching it off. Maybe this is a stupid comment, but it's as though the
computer rests a a stage above shut down, and the only way to start the
complete reboot sequence is to unplug it, or switch off at the computer or
mains.

Thanks for all the advice from everyone.

I had this same problem yesterday (twice in fact) with about 3-4 beeps in a
row & it took several tries to boot up. Of course, I've been getting the
DREADED BLUE SCREEN on occasion as well, with no solutions.

Elsie,

The beep codes are specific to the motherboard bios chip in your computer.
You have to go to the manufacturers web site and search around for the
answer.

Also, 3-4 beeps doesn't cut it. It is 3 *OR* 4. It does make a difference in
diagnosing a problem.

If you are getting the beeps during start up then you have a problem with the
computer's hardware somewhere. These beeps are important! There is a series
of beeps which tell a "code" for which piece of hardware is faulty/failing.
If you are not familiar with working inside of the computer's case, take it to
a local repair center for help.

I am having exactly the same problem as described with my monitor not coming
on when I turn my computer on from the front power switch. The computer seems
to start normally but the standby light on the monitor continues to flash
orange and not solid green as when the monitor comes on. I also have to
switch the power off at the wall to get it to turn on. The monitor does
however come back on during a reboot. Hope someone can help, please.
