Computer will not restart or shut down from the menu

I am having trouble restarting or shutting down my
computer from the menu bar. It seems that Windows XP
starts to shut down but then my Quicken Online Backup
dialogue box comes up to remind me that I might be
missing an update ....I cancel it, but Windows still
won't shut down. The only way I can restart my computer
is to manually hit the power key ont he computer

Any ideas on how to solve the problem?
