Computer turns on - halfway

Lately my computer has been turning on while I sleep. Most recently I
know it was between 5 & 6 AM local to me. It's happened about 6 or 7
times now. It might happen more but I leave it on quite a bit.

When this happens, I turn my monitor on via an on-off panel switch, press
a key so it comes on, (and I see my desktop picture and icons, but the
rest of Windows isn't loaded (no windows start bar across the bottom of
the screen). To turn off the computer I either hold in the button on the
computer, or I press the sleep button on my keyboard (I think I set XP to
not hibernate, but to turn off instead).

Any clues? I'm on a home network but another computer does not trigger
anything.

If you scroll up the group you sill see a thread 'Computer starts by
itself' which may be of interest.

In your case it's most likely you have 'Wake on Lan' turned on in your
BIOS, networks are always talking to each other so if one machine on
the network is on then it will wake up the others, if they are set to
wake on lan.

The original poster in the thread above discovered that an alarm was
(accidentally) set in his BIOS to turn the PC on at midnight each day.

Look for "Wake" settings in BIOS: wake on lan; wake on RTC, wake on ring;
etc. Disable any settings that are currently enabled.
