This is probably a no brainer to the more accomplished out there, but can
someone please tell me how to stop my xp machine booting up every time i
plug in an external usb device (e.g camera, phone etc)

It's most likely a BIOS option in the Power Management menu, your USB
controller will most likely be assigned a particular IRQ and the BIOS is
probably listening to that IRQ and booting the PC if it occurs,
alternatively there could be a specific Boot on USB option or something like
it, but I have never seen such a thing myself yet. Just look around the BIOS
and see what options are there, normally something should pop out to you.
Just remember whatever settings you change so you can revert them back in
case of any problems.

Regards, Wichetael.
