Computer slows dramatically when My Computer is opened.

Hi
After being on for four or five hours, my computer slows dramatically when
My Computer is opened. Frequently the contents just won't appear. When I try
to close the window I get the end now prompt. Executing it creates a blue
screen with just the cursor visible. After several minutes the desktop
reappears. However, the same problems with MY Computer occur unless I
reboot. I completely reinstalled XP including SP2 and it still occurs. I have
a Pentium 4 1.6ghz with 512 mb of ram. Any suggestions

Have you tried running the scandisk to see if there are errors on your hard
drive?

Yes and there was very minor and stable issues.

Hi Peter

May I suggest a few other things. First, to check your resources and page
file commitments, do a CTL+ALT+DEL and look under the processes tab and see
how much of your cpu is being used by current running processes. Then click
on the Performance tab to see the page file being used, kernel memory, and
system memory. Adjust your page file size if necessary. Secondly, download
and run a good spyware program and run it. Adaware is a good one and free. I
hope you have an anti-virus program. Update it and run it, too. Lastly, open
a command prompt and sfc.exe /scannow. This will will check all your Windows
files under Winodws Protected Files and report and fix and corrupted files.
You will need your XP cd for this.
