Computer shuts off with click, blue screen shows w/error message

For the past three days, once a day my computer with give a click and shut
down. The screen shows a blue color with the following text:

STOP: 0x0000001(0x00000005, 0x00000002,0x00000000,0x00000005)
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Beginning dump of physical memory. Physical memory dump complete. Contact
your system administrator ortech support group.

======
I have to reboot the computer and things seem to be normal again. I just
checked the cpu right after it happened and didn't feel any sign that it was
hot, but it took about 2 minutes to get to it to check.

My computer is running Win2000 on a Pentium III 1000mHz cpu, 512mb Kingston
RAM (just checked last week with a 10 hour memtest86 test).

I'd appreciate any ideas about this error message and possible causes of the
problem.

What hardware abstraction Layer is server installed with? Standard or ACPI?

I wish I knew what you were saying, but I don't. "Hardware abstraction
layer" is not in my vocabulary. This is a server only in the sense that it
is part of a two computer, direct wired LAN. Otherwise it is just my main
computer, and the second computer LAN cable has been disconnected for a
week, and the NIC on the main computer is disabled (in Device Manager). The
main computer is connected via a different NIC to my broadband connection
that was just installed 4 days ago, not sure if that qualifies it as a
server.

What are you thinking might be causing this problem?

If four days ago, you installed a new nic, and every day for the past three
days you have gotten a stop message, suspect the drivers for said nic. You
don't say whether or not you can reproduce this problem on demand. But it
shouldn't be hard to disable or remove the nic, and see if the problem goes
away. Check the vendor web site for updated drivers as well.

From
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tr...prodtechnol/winxppro/reskit/prmd_stp_ottj.asp,
which, in its title, explicitly mentions DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

asp> later in this appendix.
a.. Stop 0xD1 messages can occur after installing faulty drivers or system
services. If a driver is listed by name, disable, remove, or roll back that
driver to confirm that this resolves the error. If so, contact the
manufacturer about a possible update. Using updated software is especially
important for backup programs, multimedia applications, antivirus scanners,
DVD playback, and CD mastering tools.

Hard to say, if the operating system was installed with a standard HAL, i'ld
suggest changing PCI slots, if an ACPI HAL, i'ld check for a bios update,
driver update and remove any NIC not required (physically).

I've found I can create the problem by running a section of a peer to peer
file sharing program called WinMx. If I run Winmx solely, there is no
problem. If I run the OpenNap networks section and "select all" for a list
of networks in two .wsx files, after about 5 minutes the blue screen will
show up. I tried running the OpenNap networks and just selecting a few of
the networks individually and the problem didn't happen...possibly because
none of the networks were connected. Only after I selected all of them, and
a number of them connected did the problem happen.

Any thoughts about this...it seems to be the only time the problem occurs.

Alas, the problem happened once when I wasn't running WinMx, but was running
a program called Mailwasher and had just asked it to download my email from
the ISPs server. So it must have a cause in common with WinMx, probably
related to a communication attempt? Who knows, but I see many error
warnings in the Win2000 event logs so I'll be asking some questions about
those soon.
