Computer shut down from the start button

Bob

I've reverted to using the classic start menu to avoid accidentally hitting
the sleep or lock button which by default appear when the start button is
pressed. Is there a way to change the default visible buttons to say restart
and shutdown? Just too easy in my house to put the computer into sleep (
which we never use anyway). I know in XP there were tweaks to hide some of
the options....such as log off but the new standard menu is trouble for
someone who does not pay attention to what they are clicking and too lazy to
go through the series of clicks to get to the "shutdown" or "restart"
buttons. With the classic menu at least the options are labeled removing the
guesswork as to what to select.
Thanks,
Bob

In advanced power management the sleep button can be changed to shut
down. I don't know a way to change the lock button. Have a great day.

Why not just place 2 shortcuts on your desktop, one for Restart and one for
Shutdown.

Create a new shortcut on your desktop. Browse to
C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe

After it has been created, rename it Restart Computer. Then go to the
shortcut's properties and paste "C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /r /t 002"
in the target line. This will restart the computer after 2 seconds.

Create a 2nd new shortcut for shutdown.exe. Place
"C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 002" in the target line. This will
shutdown the computer after 2 seconds.

In the above examples DO NOT include the quotation marks on the target line.

Now when you want to either shutdown or restart, just double click on the
appropriate icon.

Thanks for the reply Dennis. I'm sure that somewhere down the line someone
will find a way to change the lock button. It would be real nice if it could
be changed to "restart", that would give me the only 2 options that we ever
use- shutdown and restart.

Perfect Richard!
Thanks for a simple solution to my only quibble ( so far) with Vista!

98% of what I do I perform either from the desktop or from the Quick Launch
tool bar.

I haven't "touched" the start button in 8-9 days now. (-:
