computer screen cuts off

Once the computer turns on and goes to the select username screen the screen
cuts off. If I press the off button for the screen on the monitor and press
it again it will come on for about 3 seconds and then go off again.
Occasionally it will stay on for a few minutes, but usually it will not stay
on for more than 3 seconds after I turn it back on. I can still type and
click on stuff while the screen is off, but i just can't see what I am doing.
Please help me with this problem.

Sounds as if the screen refresh rate has been set too high. You don't say
what sort of monitor you have, but if its a flat panel then the refresh rate
most likely will be 60Hz or in the case of really fancy TFTs 75Hz. If your
monitor is a CRT the refresh rate should be at least 75Hz and preferably
85Hz or even 100Hz or more. First look in device manager under the Monitor
branch and ensure your monitor is not listed as "default monitor" If it is
then install a monitor profile as a monitor driver in Device manager, then
you will find that acceptable refresh rates will be displayed when you right
click the desktop-select properties-then the settings tab, click the
advanced button and then the monitor tab at the top. You can then use the
drop down list to select your screen vertical refresh rate. You will
probably need to do this in Safe Mode
