My computer restarts automatically. I have Win.XP SP2. Also when I reboot
myself, I have to click on my user name, to go to my desktop.
If this can be avoided, I would like this very much!!!

As long as it is not on a domain, you can setup XP to automatically login a
certain user when it starts (fwiw, you can do it while on a domain as well
with 3rd party app).

As far as restarting automatically... look in your event viewer for anything
suspicious, are you running antivirus / antispyware? What about you
hardware? Are all your drivers up to date? All your fans spinning that
should be? Does the restart happen every time you perform a specific
function or is it completely random?

download TweakUI and use the logon section to auto logon.

turn off the auto restart on error.

At a command prompt, type "control userpasswords2" and take out checkmark from Users must enter..............

Start thinking about what has changed since the time things worked ok and
now with the restarting problem. Were there any changes in software or
hardware? Any updates through windows update? If so could one of those
been a driver update? What is the malware status of the computer? How do
you check it?

It could be the computer is restarting because of an error. Right click My
Computer | Properties | Advanced tab | Startup and Recovery - Settings |
Under System failure untic Automatically restart. Ok out. Next time it
restarts it might then go to a blue screen with an error message. Record
that message verbatim. You can post back here with it. Also start some
research on it using this site: http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm, and doing a
Google search on the error code can be helpful too.

For the auto login, it's not good security practice to set up a system to
login automatically; All accounts should be set up with a strong password
and no auto login, but if you want to, it's straightforward to do so. Here
are several ways to do it.

1. Go to Start | Run and type in: control userpasswords2 | Ok.

2. On the Users tab, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To
Use This Computer check box and then click OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user name
and password for the account you want to be logged on each time you start
your computer.

You can accomplish the same thing by:

Download and install tweakui for xp and use its auto logon feature.

Lastly you can add the Dialog box that comes up when running control
userpasswords 2 to the Control Panel with the following tweak:

Add Control User Passwords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)

I had download Incredimail, and that was messing up everything. But I
uninstalled it. Then everything went back to normal.

Interesting. A basic troubleshooting step has always been to undo the
changes made before the problem started. Glad it's fixed and thanks for
posting back your resolution, it can help others.
