Computer reboots when using IE6 Browser

Q

Quentin Schiltz

I am running Windows 98SE. Recently my computer will unexpectedly reboot
while I'm using IE6. I have installed all Windows Updates. I am running
Panda Anti-Virus Platinum and Firewall.
It usually occurs when I'm on a web page, then click on a link on the web
page. For example, I was on a web page that had a link to "check shipping
status" of an item I recently ordered on the Internet, and when I tried to
click on the link (that is supposed to open a new window on the UPS web site
with tracking info)... **wham** the computer screen goes blank and it
reboots.
Any suggestions what I need to do to keep this from happening?

Spontaneous reboot is normally hardware problem.
Check the fan in the back of your computer box, clean it.

Also make sure you small fan on the Motherboard for the CPU is working OK.

If all seems ok then

Java issue?

Tools/internet options/advanced/Microsoft VM
....only tick the JIT compiler box and leave the Java boxes un checked
(default)

Check your Java Support
Found out what version you have and you should be able to get what you need.

Parasite?
IE 6.

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this clears your problem then find out who the malware is.

p.s Reset the 3rd party browser setting.

IMPORTANT:
Before trying to remove spyware, download a copy of LSPFIX from
the URL below - some malware may kill your internet connection when it is
removed, this program will enable you to regain your connection.

OK. Thank you for the suggestions.
My computer's power supply fan and CPU fan are both working fine, and the
inside of the case and components are clean (I remove the case cover and use
a compressed air duster every few months). I don't believe that it is
hardware related.

Under Tools|Internet Options|Advanced the following are **both** checked:
JAVA [SUN] use Java 2 v 1.4.2_01 for <applet> (requires restart) AND
Microsoft VM JIT Compiler for Virtual Machine enabled (requires restart).

Is is OK that I have both of these checked?
Thank you.
