Computer Reboots when CD or DVD are inserted into drive

I have two Sony DVD RW 830A drives recently installed in my computer.
Whenever I put any disk in either drive, the computer reboots. Here's
what I've done thus far.

1. I called Gateway Tech support and several tech guessed at what they
problem might be. They had never heard of such a problem. I told
them that I had no viruses, spyware, etc. that showed up during
checks. Also, there was no problem when I ran CheckDisk. One of the
techs had me insert the Gateway Drivers CD and boot from it and go to
GWSCAN and then QuickCheck. That came back with something that said
"Command Error". The Tech said I had a bad drive and sent me another
one (which I haven't installed because I would spend a week doing
nothing but reinstalling the XP OS and then all of my programs,
drivers, updates, etc.) When I called back and asked what "Command
Error" meant and that only the Gateway checker showed that, the tech
told me that it meant my drive was about to go back because of the
ball-bearings. I don't know of any program that will check the ball-
bearings. My hunch was immediately that she didn't know what else to
say just like the previous tech who said it was a drive problem. It
seems most techs now have a standard solution for any problem of
"reformat" or "install a new disk drive" when they don't know what is
causing a problem.

2. I then called Sony tech support and several of their tech folks had
me uninstall all DVD programs except one because she was convinced
that they were conflicting. I still had the problem after doing so.
I was finally told that it was an OS problem. EVERYTHING works great
after I insert a CD or DVD and let the computer reboot, so I don't
think it the hard drive. The tech agreed, but didn't know what to do.
(I had disconnect each drive so only one was installed at a time and
still had the problem.) I also uninstalled Secondary Channel in IDE
ATA/ATAPI Controlled and rebooted to have it automatically reinstall.
Didn't cure the problem.

3. When I did the Live Chat with Roxio, I figured it was going to be
downhill from the beginning when I said my drives would read and write
CD disks, DVD-R, DVD+R, Dual Layers disks and DVD-RAM disks. He came
back with the question, "What is a DVD-RAM disk"? To make the
paragraph short, Roxio was no help.

4. Before I started having the problem, I had upgraded Roxio to
version 9 and also Pinnacle Studio to Version 10. I'm wondering if
one of those may be the problem. I haven't tried uninstalling them
yet to see if the problem is still there.

I find it interesting that all of these techs say they have never
heard of this problem, but all of us on this thread have the problem.
Has anyone found a solution?

Hello,

When exactly does it restart? At which part of the insert sequence does it
do so?

Press button > tray ejects > insert CD > push tray/push button > tray closes
tries to read > stops reading

If its from 'tray ejects' to 'tray closes', its most likely an hardware
issue. The drive may be faulty, the cable may be loose, the drive may be
tightened too tightly or the CPU may not be held tight enough.

When ever I put any kind of DVD or CD into either drive, the green
light blinks rapidly for about 15 seconds and then the monitor goes
black and the computer reboots. The only error that ANY of the
diagnostics comes up with is when I run GWSCAN and its "Quick Test"
and that says there is a "Command Error". That doesn't tell me
anything. The techs I've talked to all use the stand "Reformat your C
drive" or "replace you C drive" when they don't know what's causing it
either. Everythging else work fine and the drives work great if you
let the computer reboot with the disk still in the drive(s). Out oc
curiosity, last night I ran the GWSCAN on my 300Gb "D" hard drive that
works beautifully with no problems. I got the message "Command Error"
with it, too. I don't have any faith in the Gateway techs knowing
anything beyond very basic computer systems knowledge. I'm not
willing to have to start all over agin with a new C drive and
installing/updating everything. That's a lot on labor intensive
hours. If it was a system error, one would think that Microsoft would
have a fix for it.

None of the Techs I called were helpful. (see below) However, I
statred to suspect the upgrade I did to Pinnacle Studio 10. One of
the programs in the upgrade is to be able to write directly to a DVD.
I went to Control Panel/Add & Revove programs and removed the Direct
DVD Writing program from Studio 10. Both drives work well now. Sonic/
Pinnacle is now aware they have a problem with one of the programs in
their upgrade to Studio 10.
