Computer powers itself down

My computer running W2K powers itself down when I turn it on. This can happen
right after the initial splash screen or after the computer boots
successfully. I may be in the middle of writing an email or whatever. It is
not a normal shutdown. You can hear the computer turning itself off and a
black screen appears. When I reboot it goes through a chkdsk and when it
completes it, it turns itself off again.
Where do I look to fix this? I checked for viruses and found none. I
reinstalled the operating system but this did not work either.
Hope somebody can figure this out.

It may be overheating. Check that the CPU fan is still working.

I think you are right, Cliff. The computer now stopped working completely. I
cannot boot at all. The power supply must be gone now due to the overheating.
I will take it to a repair shop to see what can be done but I think I need a
new power supply in addition to a fan.
