Computer loses UNC Path

D

David Fletcher

I have an NT domain with more than 10 2000 member
servers. I have a file server that works great when it
is busy and there is plenty of network traffic, but at
night and early in the morning, we lose the path to the
server. You can't find it by mapped drives or UNC path.
It doesn't respond to pings but the name resolves. You
can get to everything from the server and when I ping the
range of my clients from the server, they can find it
again. At night, there is serveral hours when the server
is inactive and then my user comes in at midnight. Early
in the morning the problem exists also but then as more
users get to work, the problem clears up.
None of my other servers have this problem. I have 2
nics in the server and I have used both and made sure
that the power options are set not to put in standby, I
have removed the IP stack and reinstalled, I put a static
mapping in WINS, I have pulled out my hair and pummeled
the server...
Has anybody ever heard of this.....does anybody have
any suggestions?

Check the "Status" of the NIC and see if it changes to disconnected.
Is the actual link going out? Do you still have a green light on the NIC
itself?
Does moving the cable to another port on the hub/switch help?
Are their any properties when you view the NIC's configuration that may be
causing it to "sleep"?

If all else fails you could setup a scheduled event that opens a batch file
every hour that pings a local server. That might be enough to keep the
connection alive. . .
