It occurs in various programs - when I set the cursor in a word document,
email or even address bar of explorer, as soon as I click to place the
cursor, the computer begins deleting all following text as if I were holding
down the delete key. Also, when I click a file on my desktop to open it, I
get the "are you sure you want to send this file to the recycle bin?" Is
this a virus (Norton antivirus has not detected anything), or have I messed
up my settings somehow? Thanks.

It sounds like a hardware problem - your delete key is stuck?

Try an alternative keyboard and see if the problem exists still.
