Computer hangs when trying to resume after log-off

We have 2 profiles on our home computer. When one of us is done working on
the computer, we log off and are returned to the screen that shows the 2
profiles and the option to shutdown. We don't shutdown the computer.

After a certain amount of undetermined time, the screen goes black. I have
already turned off hibernate mode, but this still happens. I also tried to
find and delete the hiber (can't remember it's exact name) system file and
delete it, but one was not found on either the C or D drive. I made sure I
searched on hidden files and got plenty of results with h*.sys, but none with
the full file name or hib*.sys.

When I want to resume operating the computer, normally all I had to do was
move the mouse and the login screen would appear. Now all that happens is
the cursor appears and moves around on the screen. If I press Cntl-Alt-Del
it brings up the login screen, but when a profile is selected it hangs and
does not log in. I have to reboot the computer back to the login screen to
be able to login.

This seems to have started happening after installing critical updates, but
I'm not certain. It was working fine until recently (last 2 weeks?)

I'm using XP Home edition and have all updates, including SP2. You can reach
me at (e-mail address removed). Thank you.

The system is activating the 'logon.scr' screen saver, and that file might
be corrupt.

To repair all system files, go to Start/Run, and type: SFC /SCANNOW
