Computer Hangs on Shutdown with Windows Update Component

We have had a number of Windows 2000 servers over the past 4 months which are
hanging on shutdown after running a windows automatic update. It's not the
same update, the servers have different applications installed on them. but
at sometime we come in and find the servers in a state of shutting down. They
are differnet makes of server, from HP DL360 and ML370 to Compaq EVO desktops
with W2K server installed on them. Some are domain controllers, some citrix
servers, print servers etc... etc... etc...

Sorry about the wide range but trust me there doesn't appear to be any
common denominator.

If anyone has any ideas as to what is causing this we would be grateful.

I think I may have found a link between the server hanging on shutdown and
the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tools Monthly Scan. I've checked the
server hanging and forced reboots we've had to do against the MRT.log file
located in the %windir%\Debug directory. There does appear to be some
correlation between the scan and the hang. Especially if it doesn't find or
report anything in the logfile. I'll carry on checking when I can and report
back the findings.

If anyone else having the same issues could check their problem machines for
the same link, I would appreciate it.
