My computer frequently hanged (screen freezed) after using for 10 to 20
minutes under WinXP (SP2) with 512 M RAM. Most of the time after the
hanging and reboot, I found the following events in the Event Viewer:

System
(1) “Microsoft (R) Windows (R) 5.01. 2600 Service Pack 2 Uniprocessor Free.â€
With Event ID 6009; &

(2) “The Event log service was started.†With Event ID 6005

Application

(1) “wuauclt (2000) The database engine stopped.†With Event ID 101; &

(2) “wuaueng.dll (2000) SUS20ClientDataStore: The database engine stopped
the instance (0).†With Event ID 103

Could someone help me to fix the problem without the need to uninstall SP2,
please?

Try this: Start>Run and type in each line hitting <Enter> at each end:

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuapi.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\atl.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wucltui.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wups.dll

Dear Jose,

Thank you for ur response. I did wat u advise and the computer responded
with "succeed". However, my computer continues hanging frequently.

Any advices please.

And the following events were found after hanging and rebooting:

wuaueng.dll (112) SUS20ClientDataStore: The database engine started a new
instance (0).
With Event ID 103

wuauclt (112) The database engine 5.01.2600.2180 started. With Event ID 100

wuauclt (1744) The database engine stopped. With Event ID 101

Thanks

If you use XP firewall, try to disable Aotumatic Updates. I think you have troubles with Windows Update.

Thanks again for the advice. I disabled the Automatic Update as advised, but
my computer still frequently hanged. Would it have other possible cause?

One question: the events are informations or errors. If info, don't worry.
If this were the case, Start>Run and type in "msconfig" without quotes. Go to "Services" tab, hide Windows services and uncheck the remain. Also, go to "Startup" tab and uncheck all the entries. Note that you will disable the antivirus and the firewall (if you use one third party). So unplug from Internet. How goes all?

Dear Jose,

Many thanks for your advices.

Most of the events are informational(I think) as they (such as Application
Event IDs 100, 102, 300 & 301 and System Event IDs 6005, 6009 & 4201) specify
that “no user action is necessary.†However, even they are informational,
the results were the same, i.e. hanging of my computer when these messages
appeared.

Anyway, I have made changes as advised but my computer still hanged
frequently. Any advices?

Thanks again!

What are you doing when it hangs? Always when you are doing the same thing or it hangs randomly?

Dear Jose,

It hangs randomly, sometime hangs within 5 minutes (or even less) after
booting while sometime hangs 30 minutes after rebooting.

Should I uninstall SP2?

Thanks

Edmond

Honestly, I don't whether SP2 will fix your issues. I think it's better to fix them and then install SP2.
If you start in safe mode (when booting hit F8 and choose the option), does it also hang?

Dear Jose,

I am now in safe mode and I am waiting to see if it would hang again.
It is late now and I shall go to bed. Thank you very much for ur time spent
on my problems. Write to u tomrr.

Have a nice dream.
