computer "freezing" when closing programs

In the last two weeks my computer is freezing when I
close programs. Not every time, but often. Also, upon
double-clicking to open a program, it doesn't always
open. Here's what I've done so far: Went to Emachine's
website and went through the process of making sure I
didn't have the worm (though I'd already done it once),
defragemented, did a disc scan, did a disc clean-up.
Just as an aside, this started happening after I
downloaded the WindowsXP upgrades during my first check
for the "worm".

Can anyone tell my if they've had this problem and/or
know how to fix it?

Start>open control panel>Administrative tools>open Event
Viewer>Here you look for the cause application error.
Run spybot.Have you scanned your system with latest virus
definitioned antivirus?
