Hi,

Do check KB885626 and check processor with Intel Frequency ID Tool (see the
KB link). you might have a spooky processor (doesn't necessarily have to be
the Prescot, could be a similar one, check Family name...)
Regards.

Hi Guys,

I'm having similar freezing problems. I'm not the computer whiz you guys
are, so what does KB885626 mean? Also, how can I tell if my Dell (Dimension
8250, 2.4Ghz Pentium 4, 512 megs of RAM, Win XP home edition) has the
questionable parts you refer to? The computer runs slow as molasses now and
if it does boot up properly (about 60% of the time), I often (80 - 90% of the
time) have to power down manually. DRIVING ME NUTS!!! Microsoft tech
support is of no use, and the problem arose after installing their SP2
download. Can't tell you how annoying that is!

Help please.

Rock,

Sorry to sound like a novice, but I am. The link you gave me to
troubleshoot with System Config in XP explains directions for dealing wtih a
number of different files and settings. I'm not sure which one(s) refer to
my occasional boot up and frequent crash problems.

Here's the list of what it tells me I can troubleshoot:
• The System.ini file
• The Win.ini file
• The Boot.ini file
• Programs that are set to load during the startup process (these programs
are specified in the Startup folder and in the registry)
• Environment settings
• International settings

Which of these should I employ?

Thanks again!

Start with the ones on the Startup tab, then the non MS services on the
services tab. Use the princple of halves. Turn off half and see if
that resolves the issue. If not, turn them back on and do the other
half. Keep on halving till you find what could be causing the problem.
