Every time I turn on my computer it brings up the Windows XP welcome screen
and then freezes before I have a chance to click on my user name. I can start
up in safe mode but not in any other mode. Can anyone please suggest what I
should do to fix this.

Make sure you are free of virus's/malware, run these in safe mode after
deleting all temp files

The article suggests:
To resolve this problem, select the Delete restoration data and proceed to
system boot menu option which enables the computer to perform a normal
restart, instead of performing the restoration process while the computer is
in Hibernate mode.

Problem is I don't get any opportunity to select the Delete restoration data
and proceed. Any otrher ideas?

Press the [F8] key while booting and see if these options appear.

No luck, just brings up the "safe mode" options...

In that case, the MSKB article 294427 does not apply most likely.

Thanks Roberto, will give it a try.
PS: How do I delete all temp files?

Start > Control Panel > Network & Internet Connections>Internet
Options>Delete Files & Delete Cookies buttons, Also goto C:\Windows\Temp,
delete a all.

Sure looks that way. Thanks very much for your help in any case. I'll just
have to keep trying. Any other suggestions welcome!

Well, since that article does not apply apparently, it would be helpful
to know what system changes have been made prior to the first encounter
of this problem. Perform a repair install, this should fix that issue:

"How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP"
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315341

Please note that the available Windows updates have to be re-installed
when done.
