computer freezes

Running Windows XP Home SP1, the computer starts and loads my desktop and
after a while its hangs up with no hard drive action that I can hear. Before
this happens I can acess Task Manager and watch the Processes or Performance
windows. At the point it freezes under processes there is only one running
"SVCHOST.EXE" and it indicates that 100% of CPU is being used. If I end the
it the computer then begins to run normally as far as I can determined. There
may be somthing that is not loaded as a result of this action, but I havn't
come across it yet. I wonder has any body else experience this problem or
have any ideas on how determine what is causing this problem. I have 3
different SVCHOST.EXE list files but only one runs.

You are probably downloading updates. Turn that off, and it will probably stop.
Your reply seems to be the answer after I was able to turn off automatic
updates permanently. My first attempt caused Norton System Works to say it
had a problem and to click here to fix it. Which I did, this turned on
automatic updates again which I didn't realize until restarting the computer
with the same problem. Finally I figured out how to turn off updates
permanently. Thanks
