Computer Freezes when I put in a dvd or cd

Got a new MicroAdvanatge DVD+-RW, installed it no
problem. Now when I put in a cd or dvd, the computer
freezes (and sometimes autoplayer pops up). Take the cd
or dvd out of the drive and the computer unfreezes as if
nothing had happen.
I have all the latest patches from MS and the manuf.
DOes anybody else have this or similar problem?
I am going to return it to the store Friday if I cann't
come up with something. I have tried all kinds of things,
disconecting my regular cd player and making it
the "master" and tried "cable select" both with same
results, nothing. Tried uninstalling the driver, rebooted
and it reinstalled the same drive from MS.

Did install the IDE UltraDMA drivers?? They are part of the motherboard
chipset drivers and are more up to date than the standard one in XP.

I try it on my ulta ata controler card, it saw it as a IDE
33 mhz device. (same probles as before). the ulta card
sayes it can run on contorler at one speed and the other
at another. The manfactors site show it as an E-IDE
device. but if you a link for the ide drivers, i will
explore it. Thanks,
