Computer freezes during boot-up

My computer freezes during boot-up after I tried to change the size of a logical partition. My operating system is Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade (upgraded from Win98). If I use my Win98 Start-Up floppy disk with either WinXP or Win98 CD, I get two messages:
Not enough drive letters available.
The Windows 98 Setup Files were not found.

I have run a search in the Knowledge Base but not found anything regarding "Not enough drive letters available." Any suggestions how to overcome this problem?

No, I'm stuck in DOS mode. I can't access Win98 or WinXP CD. I tried to use FDISK on Win98 floppy and computer froze.
I bought second hard drive and installed it as main drive with OS. Computer works ok. Tried to hook up old hard drive as secondary so I could recover data. Computer froze during boot.
Darndest thing I ever saw.
