Computer continuously reboots...

Hi, I have not run across this issue before. I have not downloaded anything
new. All Service Packs are up to date. My Dell 8200 Desktop PC started
rebooting and now will not allow me to get even to the log on screen. All
other methods of rebooting, i.e., Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking,
turning off automatic reboot upon system failure, etc., using the F8 function
key during reboot does not work. In fact, even using my Windows XP
installation CD fails to work. The reboot process gets to a certain point
and then it shuts down again and restarts the reboot process all over again.
I do not have Reovery Console installed. Any ideas/suggestions would be most
welcome ASAP as I have finals this week and need the files...Help!? Please
respond back to (e-mail address removed) Thank you in advance...

Hi,

I have just started having the same problem - sorry I have no hints to try.
I have tried the following, with no success:

1) Boot in Safe mode - simply restarts like the normal boot does, after the
line loading "mup.sys" is displayed.
2) run boot logging to try to find where the error occurs - no log file is
produced
3) test all my memory for 12 hours - OK
4) reseat video card
5) boot in VGA mode
6) replace kernel32.dll with a new copy from the CD - suggested in the
Knowledge Base.
7) scan for viruses with Norton CD
8) I even tried a repair install, but it didn't help.

Any more ideas, Microsoft wizards?Thanks,
Tom

Don,
I had a similar problem with my Dell Dimension 8250 a couple of weeks ago.
I finally called Dell, and the tech had me take the computer apart and
re-seat the cards. The problem went away. (It was pretty dusty in there
too, so I cleaned it out with canned air while I had it open.) I hope this
helps.

I had this same problem and in desparation installed SP2. Amazingly,
the problem was solved. I don’t know what caused it or how SP2 fixed
it.

Good luck,
David

Thanx to all for your comments...Nancy, I will try yours as it is the only
thing that I can do at this point...even my tech guru here at work (a
fastidious IT guy) is dumbfounded, as am I. At this point anything will be
helpful! Don

I also thank you all. For some reason, my computer booted just fine this
afternoon. Obviously, I have an intermittent problem that will probably
recur. It sounds like Nancy's solution will be a good thing to try, although
my computer is basically only two months old, built by me from parts.

Thanks to all,
Tom

Hi!

Have now been facing the same type problem. So far not resolving it, but
will
go on checking ...

The problem is not on mup.sys, even being the last loaded one, but on some
driver loaded in a second or two after that ... Hard to say how to
find/recognize the real problem point, maybe backing with some update, or
detaching some components and rebooting, or checking possible Stop Error
details, or doing some other troubleshooting etc., and as a last hope action
try to Repair install the Windows with a full licence Retail CD.

Best regards,

Pete V.

I finally determined that my hard drive was the culprit. I had backed up
using Drive Image, to another drive, and can boot from it with no problem.
So it is NOT a software problem. I tried everything, unplugging cards,
changing cables, etc.

I think it can have a multitude of causes and be hard to diagnose. Most of
the problems I've ever had with a computer were due to power supply issues.

Best of luck

Tom
