computer accounts still showing up in AD

When we delete or rename a computer account, the old name still shows up in
the Computers container in Active Directory.

I remember with NT Server 4 you could manipulate that with Server Manager.
But how can remove old computer accounts in Active Directory, or even find
out if they're still used ?
