I keep getting message "windows can compact messages stored"
How do I Decompress them? I consulted your Help and no success. A friend did
the same thing and lost almost all vital email

How do I recover pictures and documents after they've been Zippered?
even when such files are "uncompressed" your Help say the Windows keeps the
originals.
apprecite you sharing your real knowhow
Windows Vista Ultimate 2008

That's not what it says.
It offers to compress the message store, not any folders or messages. This
is the index
that keeps track of messages. It does not affect the messages.
Let it do it, and then you won't see it for a while.
You can change the frequency at..
Tools - Options - Advanced - Maintenance
[x] Compact the database on shutdown every [xx] runs

..zip files can be opened natively.
Right-click on the .zip file, select "Extract all"

Is your friend running Outlook Express, not Windows Mail?

Compacting is not compressing (zipping). Compacting has no effect on your
pics in an email or attachment.
