Compressed files ???

ibbobby

I have been trying to locate a decompression program which
I believe I found within Windows XP. I believe it was
Winzip. Should it be there? If so, where do I find it?
If not is there any other expansion facility available in
XP and where might it be?

Thanks,

Bob

P.S. Sorry to be so thoroughly incompetent!

No. It is not a part of Windows.

If so, where do I find it?

It's a shareware product. A web search will find it.

Windows XP comes with built-in zip/unzip capabilities that you
may find adequate.

Thanks Steve. Would you be willing to compare QuickZip to
the compression program which comes with XP ... Compressed
Files Folder ... I gather that the XP programs is disabled
if a different compression extraction program is
installed. Why might I prefer one to the other?

If you have time to reply Thanks!

Windows XP can unzip and zip standard .ZIP files.

To create one, select files or folders in explorer, right click and select
"Send to compressed folder".

To open one, just double click on it and it will open like a folder.

Though the zip features built into XP are pretty basic. If you need more
than just simple zip/unzip then you will have to purchase a full compression
product as mentioned below...

Thanks Ken,

Are you familiar with QuickZip or any of the others?

Why might one prefer them to the facility that comes with
XP?

If you have time to reply ... Thanks,

Sorry, I don't know QuickZip. My personal favorite has long been
ZipMagic, but its value is clearly lessened in XP, with its
built-in facilities.

I've never used the XP compression but Larry submitted what sems a good
rundown on the differences. I don't know that XP's compression is
disabled by anything but depending on how a 3rd party product installs
it can re-associate all archive file types with itself. That is the case
with WinZip unless you tell it not to. This doesn't appear to be the
case with QuickZip.

To be completely honest, I am lazy and I much prefer self-extacting
archives :)

Hi Bob,

No. To restore the default behavior, go to Start/Run and type in:
regsvr32 zipfldr.dll

Bob I see you're considering different compression programs. Adding my $.02
I like IZArc mainly because it's full featured, handles just about every
compression format you might run across,
7-ZIP, A, ACE, ARC, ARJ, B64, BH, BZ2, BZA, CAB, CPIO, DEB, ENC, GCA, GZ,
GZA, HA, JAR, LHA, LIB, LZH, MBF, MIM, PAK, PK3, RAR, RPM, TAR, TAZ, TBZ,
TGZ, TZ, UUE, WAR, XXE, YZ1, Z, ZIP, ZOO
and of course 'cause it's free.

Winzip is a third party (shareware) product from www.winzip.com

You should be able in XP to simply double click a zip file and have it
open to show the content and allow you to select and extract things. If
that is not working, go to Start - Run and run the line
regsvr32 zipfldr.dll
