compress old files

I was told that in performance + maintenance re: whether to check the box
or not; Do not compress old files If files are needed they will take more
time to retrieve also defrag takes care of them. Is this advice accurate?
Thanx again

If these old files are used by you frequently then don't compress them.
If you just want to store them in case you may need
them then yes compress them.
