Complicated Network

OK, I have two machines running on XP Pro with all updates. They are
connected to the internet through 10/100 NICs through a router-to-broadband
setup, along with 3 other comps, which works fine. The TCP/IP settings are
manually set to work for this. Now, what I want to do is connect the two
computers with Gigabit NICs with a crossover cable. Can it be done and how?
I have tried everything I could think of and no matter what I do, as soon as
I enable the Gigabit NIC on either comp the internet connection is lost on
that computer until I disable the Gigabit NIC. Thanks in advance for a great

In this case, you may want to setup ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on one of computers so that both computer can access the Internet. This how to setup ICS may help,

Make sure that the gigabit NICs use a different IP address subnet than
the 10/100 NICs, and don't assign a default gateway to the gigabit
NICs.
