I am having a problem trying to find out how to insert a special
character in my page numbering.
For example, in my English documents, I have been able to successfully
change the chapter numbering to "Intro" so that my page numbers in my
footers display automatically as "Intro-1", "Intro-2", etc.

For my German documents, I need to use an umlat character, but have
been unable to figure out how to do this. I need my chapter to be
"EINFÜHRUNG" so that page numbers will display as "EINFÜHRUNG-1",
"EINFÜHRUNG-2", etc.

Any ideas?

If the word with the umlaut appears in the document, select the word and
create a bookmark to that word. If it doesn't, insert the word somewhere as
hidden text or with a white-colored font and then make a bookmark of the
word.

Click in the footer. Click Insert > Cross Reference. Choose Bookmark and
Bookmark Text in the drop-down menus.

Select the bookmark in the large pane.

Click Insert.

From the menu, Insert - Symbol brings up an expanded character set from which you should be able to select the umlauted character. HTH

Thanks, Bonnie. I will try this out; it deviates from our current
method and template, but it is worth a shot. We currently use the
heading styles in Word for the chapter numbering.
Cheers!
